Cubism: Developed by Picasso and Braque. Cubism is an early-20th-century art movement which brought European painting and sculpture historically forward toward 20th century Modern art.

Think about bringing in the multiple perspectives and flattening of forms into shapes. Create a portrait of yourself bringing inspiration from Picasso, Braque, analytic cubism and synthetic cubism.  You may use any medium you choose (paint, paper, felt, markers, etc).  This must be personal to you and therefore, I am going to cap the parameters at either yourself or your pet. Your portrait must be accompanied by an analysis (preferably typed) justifying why your portrait should be considered a representation of the cubist movement.  Use specific visual/contextual evidence to defend.

Characteristics of Cubism:

  • Stripping figures and fragmenting them down to basic shapes

  • Rejection of academic and scholarly

  • Primitive vs sophisticated

  • Raw, natural

  • Geometric forms, flattened

  • Rejection of single point of view/multiplicity of vantage points

  • Not anatomically correct

  • Fractured

  • If I want to be able to show you both the back and front and inside and outside simultaneously, I can fragment the object by, in this case, tearing it up

  • Deconstructed, breaking objects into smaller elements

  • Juxtaposition

  • Neither naturalistic nor conventional
